A Working Studio
There has never been a time in Jim’s life that didn’t include a need to create art. He began trying to draw people who looked like people at a very early age. He saved his lunch money at age 12 to buy his first set of oil paints, and his first attempt at an oil painting was a portrait. By high school in the early1960’s he was proficient enough that he received frequent requests for his creations.
After high school, Jim entered the Navy and was on active duty during the Cuban Missile crisis and the assassination of JFK. He was trained in electronics and, upon release from active duty he worked for two years as a technician in the American space program and then used his G.I. bill benefits to attend college. He graduated and worked as an electrical engineer and eventually attended law school at the University of Oregon. He retired from the Colorado district attorney’s office where he worked as Chief Deputy in April, 2012.
The needs of work and family during his work years made it difficult to devote time to art, but Jim drew and painted whenever he could. He used art books, magazines, and recorded material to supplement the skills he gained through self instruction. Since Jim retired, he has devoted much time to art, and has received a number of awards in local and regional art shows. Jim has presented workshops on portraiture and figure drawing.
Jim doesn’t work strictly within one genre or one medium. His greatest interest, however, is pictures of, or containing, people. Jim is able to work directly from life, but many of the subjects can only be done from photographs. Frequently, the images come from small black-and-white snapshots taken decades or more in the past.
